Trastevere is the Italian form of the Latin expression trans Tiberim "beyond the Tiber". Trastevere district is is extremely popular with both Romans and tourists hanging around it, and is an ideal place for exploring the historical parts of Rome on foot. Its logo is a golden head of a lion on a red background, the meaning of which is uncertain. The famous district includes two of the most ancient churches of Rome, Santa Maria in Trastevere and Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. Santa Maria in Trastevere is the the first church in Rome to be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are other famous squares like Piazza Trilussa, Piazza S. Pietro in Montorio and a lot of important streets: Viale Trastevere, Via della Lungara and Via della Lungaretta. Trastevere is close to some of the city's major parks, lovely for walking, relaxing and in the case of the Janiculum to the north, for some of the best views of Rome. At night, this is the recognized meeting place for locals and visitors alike, where they can experience the nightlife of the excellent restaurants where you can taste the typical roman cuisine, clubs, wine bars, pizzerias, and bars. Trastevere includes also a famous street market Porta Portese where on Sunday morning you can buy everything: clothes, shoes, bags, luggage, camping equipment, linen, towels,pans, kitchen utensils, plants, pets, spare parts, cassettes ...
